6 different ways to verify income tax returns (ITRs)

Here are the steps to verify the income tax return (ITR) in 6 different ways.

The final process of filing a tax return is to verify it. According to income tax laws, if the user does not verify the tax return within 120 days of uploading it, it will be invalid. The 6 different ways to verify a return include one physical medium and five electronic media. If the tax return requires an audit, it should be verified with a “digital signature certificate”.

Here are the 6 different ways to verify a tax return:

1. OTP based in Aadhaar

  • In this process, you must first make sure that your mobile phone number is linked to Aadhaar.
  • The registration must be submitted on the Single Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database, with the PAN linked to Aadhaar.
  • Now visit “My Account” and press “Electronically verify return”
  • Choose the option “I would like to generate an Aadhaar OTP to e-verify my return”.
  • An SMS will be generated on your mobile number registered with the 6-digit OTP.
  • Enter the WBS received and mention it in the required box
  • Then click Submit.
  • Once submitted, your RTI will be verified.
  • The Aadhaar-based OTP is only valid for 30 minutes.


  • The net banking facility on your bank account also helps verify the ITR.
  • There are only selected banks that allow you to electronically verify your ITR.
  • To check banks to check ITR, click on the link https: // www. Incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.
  • You do not need to be logged in to the e-filing website when logging into your bank account.
  • You must register your PAN card with the bank.
  • To check the RTI using the Net Banking feature, you need to log into your bank account on the bank’s website.
  • Now select the e-verify option under the “Tax” tab.
  • Then you will be redirected to the Income Tax Service e-filing site.
  • Select the ‘My Account’ tab and click on the ‘Generate EVC’ option.
  • A 10-digit alphanumeric code will be generated and sent to your email address and mobile number.
  • The code will be valid for 72 hours.
  • Under the ‘My Account’ tab, visit the ‘e-verify’ option.
  • Choose the option ‘I already have an EVC’.
  • Now enter the OTP on your registered mobile number.
  • Select “Send”.
  • Finally, your ITR will be checked.

3. Generation of EVCs via a bank account

  • To verify your ITR, banks must be pre-validated.
  • Visit your e-deposit account profile settings to pre-validate your bank account.
  • Required details should be provided, such as bank name, account number, IFSC code and mobile phone number.
  • The registered mobile number must be provided and it is present in the bank’s files.
  • The pre-validation process is successful when your PAN card details, like name, are similar to bank account statements.
  • Once the previous step is complete, select the “Generate EVC” option under the “My Account” tab.
  • A code will be directed to your mobile number.
  • Then select the e-verify option in the ‘My account’ tab and enter the code.
  • Note: Changing cell phone number or email is not allowed without bank revalidation.

4. Verification of income tax returns via the Demat account

  • A Demat account holder can have a Demat account to verify your ITR.
  • This method is equivalent to the validation of the RTI of the bank account.
  • You must pre-validate your Demat account to verify your tax return.
  • Visit your e-deposit account profile settings to pre-validate your bank account.
  • Required details should be provided, such as cell phone number, email id and the name of your custodian ie NSDL or CDSL.
  • The registered mobile number and the e-mail identifier must be provided and are present in the Demat account.
  • The pre-validation process is automatic and usually takes around 1 to 2 hours and if there is an error it is communicated to you by email.
  • You can only use your Demat account to generate EVCs after validation of your details by your custodian.
  • Go to the option ‘Generate EVC’
  • Then select “Generate EVC via Demat account number”.
  • Enter the EVC you received on your registered cell phone number to verify your ITR.
  • Note: Changing the cell phone number or e-mail is not allowed without revalidation with the custodian.

5. Generation of EVCs via your ATM

  • The option is only available for 6 selected banks.
  • You can check on the official portal the banks registered under ITR verification through bank ATM.
  • To generate EVC, you need to go to the bank’s ATM.
  • Swipe your ATM card.
  • Then press the “Pin for filing income tax”.
  • Now an EVC will be directed to your registered cell phone number.
  • This EVC is valid for 72 hours.
  • You need to log into your e-filing account on the official income tax website.
  • Select the “e-check returns” option.
  • Choose the ITR to verify it and select the option “EVC already generated through an ATM”.
  • Provide the EVC and your tax return will be verified.

6. Sending signed ITR-V / acknowledgment of receipt

  • This is an offline mode of ITR verification.
  • You must send a signed copy of the ITR-V (acknowledgment of receipt) to the ministry.
  • To send ITR-V to verify your tax return, follow the points mentioned below: a) ITR-V is a one-page document to be signed in blue ink. You cannot mail ITR-Vc) There should not be any irrelevant documents other than ITR-Vd) You will receive an SMS notification on your mobile phone and your username by email once your ITR has been received by the income tax service. This is considered a receipt from ITR-V, and the indication for processing the tax return is separate.
